Nagapattinam district was carved out by bifurcating the composite Thanjavur district on 18. 10. 1991. It is an unique district with all it's historical and cultural significance. Tourism plays a key economy for the district even though agriculture and fishing are the major economy. Nagapattinam district lies on the east coast of Tamil Nadu. The district is surrounded on the east by Bay of Bengal, on the west by Thiruvarur district on the south by Thanjavur district and on the north by Cuddalore district. The district lies between10degree. 10' and 11 degree.20' in the north latitude and between79.15 and 79.50 in the East longitude.Thisdistrict enjoys a maximum temperature of 32 degree C and a minimum temperature of 24.6 degree C. South west monsoon and North east monsoon fetch an average rainfall ranging from 908.2 to 262.2mm.
The geographical area of this coastal distirit is 2761 Sq.km. The district consists of two revenue divisions one with the headquarters at Mayiladuthurai and another with the headquarters at Nagapattinam. There are seven taluks namely Nagapattinam Kilvelur, Thirukkuvalai, Vedaranyam, Mayiladuthurai, Sirkali and Tharangambadi.
